Wanted Gang Leader Killed in Dagestan

RIA Novosti | 20:29 08/06/2012

A gunman who was killed along with another six militants in the southern Russian republic of Dagestan early on Friday was a long-sought after gang leader, the national anti-terrorist committee said.

Rustam Gasanov, 31, was blocked in an apartment with his cohorts from the infamous Kyzlyar group at 4:00 a.m. on Friday. He had been on the wanted list for three years for murders, blowing up railways, shooting at a police squad, planting a roadside bomb, extortion and other crimes.

“In 2003, he was convicted and served a sentence for robbery. In September 2009, he … was put on the federal wanted list,” the anti-terrorist committee said.

The gunmen killed in the operation also included a woman, Gasanov’s partner, who had been wanted by police for helping the gang.

According to the committee’s preliminary information, Gasanov had shot his predecessor in the gang during a conflict in spring 2010 and took over leadership in 2011.

More that a decade after the end of a federal war against separatists in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, Russian security forces continue to fight militants in other regions in the area, including Dagestan, where attacks on security forces, police and civilians are frequent.
